2022 Colours of the Year

Sometimes, it can be difficult to picture how that sofa you love the comfort of can fit your style preferences and the style of the other pieces in your home. While some pieces are not as versatile as others, many, if not most, pieces can completely change look and feel based on what you pair it with!

To show how this can be done, we’ve taken one sofa and given it three different looks.

Beige Sofa
Look One: Autumnal Traditional

Look One: Autumnal Traditional

In this look, we wanted to show a more traditional style. We did this by choosing a traditional coffee table and end table. What makes these more traditional? The colour tone, detailing on the tops and the shape of the tables as a whole.

Along with the shape of the tables, we used more traditional lines in the accessories. This includes the table lamp, candlesticks and flowers.

We leaned into the warmth of the wood tones from the tables and the sofa with the colours we used. All the colours used are on the warmer side, including cream, orange and yellow. One of the main colours used was burgundy, which is in the area rug, toss cushions and art.

Also adding to this feeling of warmth, we used thicker and softer materials.

Look Two: Coastal Rustic

For this second look, we decided to go for something that would look perfect in a lake house or cabin. This look pairs two styles together, rustic and coastal.

Every piece added to this sofa has an element of the coastal style. This includes imagery, such as the area rug with a pattern mimicking waves and the art with the image of a sailboat. We also use coastal colours of blues and browns throughout.

Some pieces tie seamlessly into both styles with their influence from nature. This includes the live edge coffee and end tables and the floor lamp that looks like a tree branch.

Another piece that ties both these styles together is the art. Not only does it have the clear coastal imagery, but looks like it was painted on multiple wood boards pieced together, and the rough finishes add to the rustic effect.

Look Two: Coastal Rustic
Look Three: Fun Contemporary

Look Three: Fun Contemporary

For this look, we decided to do something that is a little more unexpected for this sofa, but that still works incredibly well. This look features the bright colours trend in a more contemporary style.

It all started with this fun, washable area carpet. From there, we pulled out shapes and colours that are within the rug. While the artwork may be even brighter than the rug, we tied them in with the use of accessories, including the toss cushions and the candle holder.

For the tables and floor lamp, we decided to focus on a more contemporary gold. The top of the coffee table also mimics the shapes within the area rug and the lamp has curves which you can see in the artwork.

We also added more fun elements to this look with the vase (that has a face in it) and the elephants on the coffee table.

Why All These Work

Are you wondering how all these different styles can work with this one sofa? There are a few ways we accomplished this:

  • Using area rugs that tie in the colours and style(s)

  • Mimicking shapes and colours in multiple pieces throughout the look

  • Adding textures and colours onto the sofa through toss cushions and throw blankets

Using a sofa that doesn't lean toward one particular style
