Exploring Decorating Styles: Part 1

What Is COASTAL?

Coastal decor is just what it sounds like, with a “beachy” style. It is comfortable, informal and relaxing.

You might see this in a home on the East Coast, or in your very own!

Think stripes, nautical themes, weathered woods, and colours of blues and sandy taupe tones mixed with crisp white. To blend the most in-style colours, try adding a pop of coral!

For accessories you will see seashells, ships wheels, driftwood, and sea birds. Cotton and linen bedding are also a staple.

Be careful not to overdo this laid-back and comfortable style though, as it can go from beachy to bunchy fairly quickly.

What Is INDUSTRIAL?

Industrial decor might be described as inspired by Industrial spaces. Think exposed brick walls, wrought iron, and leather.

A home in this style would be the perfect loft in a refurbished factory.

Decorate with items that kind of give you an “unfinished” feel. Colours are more masculine and earthy, with lots of dark metals in clean lines and live edge woods. A sleek look for upholstered furniture is used- with leather being the cover of choice.

Accessories are often metal statues, clocks with exposed gears, large earthen floor vases, and large scaled artwork, often with a stark or abstract vibe.

Many other styles will combine well with Industrial, to soften it out. One of the most popular styles to mix in being Farmhouse.

What Is LODGE/CABIN?

The Lodge look is still very popular in both homes and cabins. It is a cozy and traditional theme.

Gather inspiration from a hunting lodge in Montana.

You will see a nod to wildlife everywhere, from art to fabrics to accessories. Plaids and tweeds, flannels and leathers are frequently used in this style. Colours are usually in a darker palette, pulled from nature, like forest green, rich brown, burgundy, red, as well as deeper blues. We see lots of earth tones in the Lodge style.

You will see accents and accessories such as snowshoes, boat-shaped shelves, and vintage posters for art. Field stone fireplaces and natural woods combine with textures in upholstery, which can be accented with brass nail heads.

The lodge look is a relaxing space where the outside comes indoors.
